Under supervision at the health district, day-to-day activities of the fellows include, but are not limited to planning, developing, and conducting epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, outreach and interventions limited in scope and/or complexity to determine the causes of diseases and implementing methods of disease control. Fellow duties also include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data and preparing epidemiologic reports. The applied epidemiology experience is supplemented by competency based professional development trainings and comradery-building programming.

Hired into the Rollins Epidemiology Fellows Program, fellows serve as early-career MPH-level epidemiologists for a two-year term within one of Georgia’s 18 local health districts or at the Georgia Department of Public Health. This position is not located at Emory, but rather at District 3-3 Clayton in Jonesboro, GA. Up to 2 – 3 days / week of remote work is a possibility, negotiated with the health district supervisor.

To successfully complete and graduate from the Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship, fellows are minimally expected to complete an oral presentation, a surveillance evaluation/quality improvement project, and a significant data analysis project over the course of the two years. Fellows are expected to work on projects and activities related to seven Core Competencies:

1. Integrated Communicable Disease Surveillance and Early Warning System: Develop an integrated surveillance framework that strengthens early detection of communicable disease trends (TB, STDs, Influenza, Hepatitis B) by standardizing workflows across SENDSS, laboratory reports, and case management systems.
2. Post-Holiday STD Surge Mitigation & Timely Treatment Initiative: Clayton County experiences predictable post-holiday STD surges, leading to delays in treatment due to limited walk-in capacity. This project will analyze multi-year STD trends and pilot systems-level solutions (e.g., triage protocols, designated walk-in days) to reduce treatment delays and improve partner services initiation.
